Family beaches in Mallorca with shallow water

Family beaches in Mallorca come in two shapes. The Bay of Alcúdia has long, shallow sand beaches. Small sandy coves, such as Cala Gran in Cala d'Or and Cala Estància in Palma, are the other kind. Every beach on this page has a listed lifeguard and shallow or gently sloping water. Use the page to compare depth, toilets and play areas, and pushchair access. It also covers buses, parking and the wind of the day. The live family score at the top shows which beaches suit today.

Where are the shallow water beaches in Mallorca for small children?

The Bay of Alcúdia has long stretches of shallow water. At Platja d'Alcúdia a rolling slope keeps the sea shallow for hundreds of yards. Playa de Muro, next to it, has little depth and small waves. Both are long sand beaches with lifeguards.

Platja d'Alcúdia is about 3,400 m long and 80 m wide, with fine white sand. Playa de Muro continues the same stretch of the bay, and its Sector I alone is 1,650 m long. Turespaña calls Playa de Muro an ideal choice for families with children, because of its shallow water and the range of activities. If you plan a day at Playa de Muro with kids, expect crowds in Sector I. Es Comú draws few bathers, mostly local families, but it is hard to reach on foot or by car.

If you prefer a small cove, several are shallow too. Cala Estància in Palma sits between two breakwaters, which keep its water calm and low. Cala Gran in Cala d'Or has shallow, calm water over fine white sand. Cala Ferrera, where Cala d'Or begins, has shallow water over a sandy bed. At Cala Marçal, by Portocolom, the bottom is only sand and the water does not get deep.

Peguera Torà, a town beach at the start of the Peguera Bulevard, has calm water and a gentle slope. Porto Cristo beach, beside the harbour, has fine sand and shallow water. Cala Agulla near Cala Rajada also slopes gently, but its shallows mix sand and rocks, so water shoes help.

Which beaches with lifeguards in Mallorca suit families?

All nine beaches on this page list a lifeguard service, but seasons differ. Playa de Muro has lifeguards in high season and Cala Gran in summer. Lifeguards watch a whole beach, so we recommend you stay within reach of small children.

Cala Estància's rescue plan includes a watchtower. Platja d'Alcúdia has several lifeguard zones along its length. Peguera Torà, Cala Marçal and Cala Ferrera also list lifeguards among their services.

Manacor raised the risk rating of Porto Cristo from medium to high in 2026, citing its features and the number of bathers. At Cala Agulla, Capdepera's environmental report lists a rip current and a longshore current, so keep children close to the shore.

Check the flag when you arrive. On Capdepera beaches such as Cala Agulla, a lightning flag now flies with the yellow or red flag. Red with lightning means an intense storm and high risk. At Cala Estància, the rescue plan marks the rocks beside the beach, boat traffic and rentals as risk zones. It also warns of weever fish and jellyfish arrivals, especially in late May and early August.

Which Mallorca beaches with playgrounds also have toilets and food?

Cala Gran in Cala d'Or has several restaurants and a children's playground behind the sand, and toilets. Felanitx council lists a playground, WC, showers and a bar at both Cala Marçal and Cala Ferrera. Platja d'Alcúdia has a children's area, toilets, showers and a Red Cross post.

Peguera Torà lists a children's area, toilets and restaurants among its services. Its municipal sheet counts 588 sunbeds, 291 umbrellas, 3 showers and one public toilet. A pine area gives some natural shade, and the beach connects with La Romana and Palmira, the other two big beaches in Peguera.

Sunbed and umbrella hire is listed at Platja d'Alcúdia, Playa de Muro, Cala Gran and Cala Estància, so you can rent shade instead of carrying it. Platja d'Alcúdia also has a pine wood behind the beach. At Cala Agulla, small pine woods reach almost to the sea.

Facilities are thinner in two places. Cala Agulla has kiosks, a restaurant and toilets, but no fresh-water showers run by the council or its contractors. On Playa de Muro, the Es Comú stretch has no hotels or restaurants, so use Sectors I and II or Es Capellans for WC and showers.

Which beaches for kids in Mallorca are easy with a pushchair or wheelchair?

Cala Estància in Palma is an audited accessible beach under UNE 170001, with ramps, parking and a restricted bathing area for reduced mobility. Platja d'Alcúdia has a walkway and an accessible bathing point with amphibious chairs for adults and children. A walkway to the shore helps with a pushchair too.

At Platja d'Alcúdia the accessible route starts from Carrer Saturn, which has three adapted parking spaces, the closest to the beach. The bathing point sits near the lifeguard module, with a shade area, transfer cranes and assisted bathing. Playa de Muro has wooden walkways to the water's edge in Sectors I and II.

Palma runs assisted bathing at five beaches, Cala Estància among them, with access walkways and adapted bathing chairs. Each point has shade, showers and accessible toilets, and staff help with transfers. You do not need an appointment, although the council recommends one.

Near Portocolom, Cala Marçal has ramps down to the shore. Porto Cristo has an amphibious chair beside the lifeguard tower. Its beach walkway was torn away by storms in October 2025, and Manacor said it could not be put back for the moment.

How do you get to family beaches near Palma, Alcúdia and Cala d'Or?

Cala Estància, inside Palma's municipality, is 11 km from the city and served by buses 15, 17 and 52. In the north, bus 327 links Alcúdia, its port and the beach. Near Cala d'Or, buses 428 and 515 stop at Cala Ferrera-Cala Serena, close to Cala Ferrera.

By car, Platja d'Alcúdia is 6.5 km from Alcúdia town, and you park in the streets of the built-up area. At Playa de Muro, Sector I has free parking in the streets that lead to the sand, with a bus stop about 100 m away. Bus 324 serves Playa de Muro with stops such as Els Pins, Las Gaviotas and Casetes des Capellans.

Cala Marçal is 1.2 km from Portocolom, with a free car park near the beach. Peguera Torà has free parking where you enter the town, and bus 122 stops on the Bulevard. Cala Gran has no stop of its own, so use the Cala d'Or stops on line 515, or park in the streets around it.

Two beaches need more planning. Parking at Porto Cristo is hard to find in summer. Since March 2026 the underground car park at Plaça de l'Aljub gives the first two hours free. Buses 427 and 428 stop at Platja de Portocristo. At Cala Agulla, a barrier has let in authorised vehicles only since May 2026. Take bus 411, 422 or 424 to the Cala Agulla 1 stop instead.

Which calm beaches in Mallorca stay sheltered in a north or west wind?

In a north wind, the beaches that face south or southeast turn away from it: Cala Estància, Cala Gran, Cala Ferrera, Peguera Torà and Porto Cristo. In a west wind, Platja d'Alcúdia, Playa de Muro, Cala Agulla, Cala Marçal and Cala Ferrera are sheltered. These are estimates from the direction each beach faces.

No beach on this list turns its back on an east wind. Platja d'Alcúdia, Playa de Muro, Cala Agulla, Cala Marçal and Cala Ferrera all face it. Cala Estància, Cala Gran, Peguera Torà and Porto Cristo neither face it nor turn away from it.

A south wind blows straight onto Platja d'Alcúdia, Cala Ferrera, Cala Estància, Cala Gran, Peguera Torà and Porto Cristo. On those days, look at Playa de Muro, Cala Marçal or Cala Agulla, which do not face south. At Cala Agulla, waves arrive from the north and north-east. The beach grows or shrinks by up to 10 m with a west or east wind.

Some sources back the geometry. Turespaña notes that Cala Gran's mid-height cliffs protect it from the wind, which keeps bathing calm. Palma's tourism site describes Cala Estància as well protected from the winds, usable almost all year. Even so, these are estimates, so check the live score before you pack the car.
