Beaches near Palma: the city and the Calvià coast
Beaches near Palma fall into two groups. Palma's own city beaches, from Portitxol to Can Pastilla and Playa de Palma, sit on the bay. Most are a bus ride from the centre. West of the city, the Calvià coast runs through Illetes, Palmanova, Magaluf, Santa Ponsa and Peguera to Camp de Mar in Andratx. There you find long resort sand with full services and a few small coves with almost none. This page helps you choose between them: how far each one is, where to park, and which beaches face away from today's wind.
Which Palma city beaches can you reach from the centre?
Palma's city beaches line the bay on both sides of the centre. Portitxol, a 90 m sand cove, sits on the cycle path from the centre. Cala Major is about 7 km west. Cala Estància lies 11 km out near the airport, at Can Pastilla, where Playa de Palma begins its run to s'Arenal.
Portitxol lies inside the Passeig del Molinar bathing zone and has showers in the bathing season. Mostly local residents use it. It has no lifeguard post. In July 2026 Palma's council listed roving checks by the beach rescue service. The Govern's 2025 water-quality report has no sampling point for it.
Cala Major has about 250 m of sand, split by a small breakwater that people use for sunbathing. Buses 3 and 6 serve it, and its address is Avenida de Joan Miró. It has lifeguards, sunbed hire and assisted bathing for people with reduced mobility, and it is back on the Blue Flag list for 2026-2027.
Cala Estància is the Can Pastilla beach between two breakwaters: 250 m of regenerated sand, where the walls help keep the water calm and shallow. Buses 15, 17 and 52 serve it. It is on the 2026-2027 Blue Flag list and has assisted bathing with adapted chairs; booking ahead is recommended but not required.
Playa de Palma runs more than 4.5 km from Can Pastilla to s'Arenal, with a promenade behind it, lifeguards, toilets and water-sport hire. Buses 504 and A51 stop in s'Arenal. It is not on the 2026-2027 Blue Flag list.
Cala Major, Cala Estància and Playa de Palma each have a council rescue plan. The Cala Major and Cala Estància plans name jellyfish, mostly in late May and early August, and jet skis as risks.
Which beaches in Calvià are closest to Palma?
Calvià's nearest beaches start at Illetes, off the Cala Major motorway exit, with Ses Illetes and Cala Comtessa. Next come Portals Nous and l'Oratori by Puerto Portals. Then come the resort sands of Palmanova, about 15 minutes from Palma by motorway, and Magaluf.
Ses Illetes, named after the Illetes area, is fine white sand, 79 m long on the council sheet. Parking nearby is very limited, so take bus 123 to the Platges d'Illetes stops. It has a lifeguard, sunbed hire, showers and restaurants.
Cala Comtessa, next door, is a small cove of sand and rock ringed by pines, with steps down to the beach. Calvià's tourism office says its size and pine shade make it popular with families with babies. No lifeguard appears on its service list.
Portals Nous has two beaches: Cala Bendinat, a U-shaped inlet between pines and low cliffs, and l'Oratori, 170 m of brown sand beside Puerto Portals. Each has a kiosk, toilet and shower. Buses 105, 108, 123 and A11 stop at Plaça de Portals.
Palmanova beach is regenerated white sand, 491 m long, one of three beaches on one promenade. Magaluf beach, next along, is 892 m on the council sheet, with 1,198 sunbeds. Both have lifeguards and showers, and Palmanova's sunbeds can be booked through a mobile app. Buses 104, 123 and A11 stop at both.
Calvià counts bathers with cameras. In summer 2025 no monitored beach passed 50% of its permitted capacity; Magaluf peaked at under 28% on 30 July. Live occupancy for Palmanova, Magaluf, Santa Ponsa and Peguera is published every 10 minutes.
Cala Vinyes, just beyond Magaluf, is a U-shaped cove of golden sand over shallow sandy bottoms. You drive in through Magaluf and park free nearby, or take bus 105. It lists a lifeguard, kiosk and toilet. The Govern rated its water sufficient in 2025.

Where are the quieter Calvià coves?
For fewer people, try the small Calvià coves away from the resort strips. The council rates El Mago and Cala Fornells low for occupancy and Portals Vells medium. El Mago and Portals Vells share a pine-ringed bay 9 km from Magaluf; Cala Fornells is a small inlet near Peguera.
For Portals Vells, drive past Magaluf towards Son Ferrer and follow the signs 1.5 km before the village. Park free nearby and walk the last stretch. The natural sand beach is 46 m on the council sheet, and the pine woods around the bay are a protected natural area. There are 26 sunbeds for hire, but no kiosk, toilet or shower.
The bay also holds the Cova de la Mare de Déu, an old quarry whose stone helped build Palma Cathedral.
Platja del Mago, in the same bay, was Calvià's first official naturist beach. It takes its name from The Magus, filmed there in 1967. The council sheet gives it 32 m of sand and lists no services.
Cala Fornells is a small inlet of coarse sand, 31 m long on the council sheet, with homes and pines along the shore. Park free in the surrounding streets, or take buses 101, 122, 131 or A11 to Bulevard-Garrovers. A 2 km forest path leads on to Caló d'en Monjo, Calvià's other naturist beach.
The council sheets list no kiosk, toilet or shower at these three coves, and no lifeguard at Cala Fornells. None appears in the Govern's 2025 water-quality report. Bring water, and we recommend swimming in pairs.
Which beaches are near Santa Ponsa and Peguera?
Santa Ponsa beach is a 578 m bay of golden sand a little over 15 km from Palma. Further west, Peguera has three beaches in a row: Palmira, Torà and La Romana. Camp de Mar, in Andratx, is a 180 m beach with a footbridge to an islet.
Santa Ponsa has a pine area for shade, lifeguards, toilets, showers and sunbed hire. Buses 103, 106, 122 and 123 stop by the sand. Amphibious chairs, walking frames and crutches come with support staff, with no booking needed. On its busiest day in June 2025, 664 people came.
The Peguera beaches total about 2,000 m. Palmira is the largest, 513 m along the boulevard, with five bus lines at the Palmira stops. Torà, 326 m, slopes gently and has pines for natural shade. La Romana is the smallest at 110 m, with woodland at one end. All three have lifeguards and free street parking, and the Govern rated their water excellent in 2024 and 2025.
Calvià's tourism pages call Santa Ponsa a family beach and point families to Torà's space and shade. Our family beaches page compares them with the rest of the island.
Camp de Mar is a U-shaped beach of fine sand, 4 km from Andratx. A narrow wooden footbridge leads to s'Illeta, the islet in the bay. Bus 101 stops there, parking nearby is free and sunbeds are paid. Pets and horses are not allowed from 1 April to 31 October.

Where can you park at beaches near Palma?
Most Calvià and Andratx beaches near Palma have free parking nearby, from Portals Nous to Peguera and Camp de Mar. The exceptions are Ses Illetes, where spaces are very limited, and Cala Major in Palma. There, street parking on Avenida de Joan Miró is paid all year.
In Palma, buses 3 and 6 avoid Cala Major's paid zone. At Cala Estància you can park nearby, about 10 minutes' drive from Plaça d'Espanya. For Portitxol, use the cycle path from the centre.
In Calvià, Palmanova and Magaluf rely on street parking near the sand. In March 2026 the council announced a planned car park in Torrenova, Magaluf, with 122 car spaces. Portals Nous, Cala Vinyes and Cala Fornells have free parking nearby.
Further west, Santa Ponsa, Peguera's three beaches and Camp de Mar have parking close by, free in Peguera and Camp de Mar. At Portals Vells and El Mago you park free near the bay and walk to the sand.

Which beaches near Palma are sheltered from the wind?
It depends on the wind; we estimate from the way each beach faces. In a north wind, south-facing beaches such as Cala Major, Cala Estància and Portals Nous are sheltered. In a west wind, east-facing Calvià beaches such as Ses Illetes, Palmanova and Magaluf are. In an east wind, try Santa Ponsa, Camp de Mar or Playa de Palma.
These are our estimates from the direction each beach faces, not a forecast. In a north wind (tramontana), Portitxol, Cala Comtessa, Palmira and Torà are sheltered too. Palma's tourism site notes that Cala Major is used in winter because it is fully protected from the cold north winds.
In a west wind (ponent), the east-facing beaches are sheltered: Ses Illetes, Palmanova, Magaluf, Cala Vinyes, Portals Vells, El Mago and Cala Fornells. They are exposed in an east or south-east wind, though the islet of sa Porrassa gives part of Magaluf some cover from the east.
In an east wind (llevant), the west-facing beaches are sheltered: Santa Ponsa, Camp de Mar, La Romana and Playa de Palma. A south wind (migjorn) leaves no beach here sheltered by our estimate. Cala Major, Cala Estància, Palmira and Torà face into it, though Cala Estància's breakwaters protect it from waves.

Which beaches face away from each wind?
Based on the way each beach faces, not a forecast. Mallorca's four main winds are the tramontana (north), llevant (east), migjorn (south) and ponent (west).
Swell from a distant storm can still reach a sheltered beach. For today, use the forecast scores at the top of the page.
